A proxy service acts as a middleman between a client and a server, receiving requests from the client, processing them, and forwarding them to the appropriate server. In a Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) - an architectural style that aims for loose coupling between interacting software agents - an ESB plays a crucial role by providing a central hub through which these interactions can be managed and routed.
